40 Methodist congregations in Sudan, South Sudan, & Egypt have expressed excitement in joining the Global Methodist Church—and here is how YOU can help...
A History
The churches located in the former Holston Conference area have shared a relationship with Methodists in South Sudan for nearly 20 years. A formal mission was established in 2008, and Rev. Boo and Rev. Phyllis Hankins (both now Global Methodist Church elders) were sent to Yei, South Sudan, where Boo served as District Superintendent and Phyllis served as pastor and English teacher to South Sudanese pastors.
Over the years, pastors were trained, Methodist congregations were established, and orphanages and other mission outposts were built and thrived. Every church was visited to hold service and meet with the chiefs and local leaders as they learned the needs of the communities. One of the primary needs was clean water and, on one trip, they passed through an army camp who requested Bibles! To assist in providing clean water, they raised money for forty deep water wells, providing one for every church before they left.
There are great needs of poverty, hunger, overwhelming numbers of orphans and widows, as well as medical and educational needs. The people hunger for education, taking every opportunity available to learn! Several Methodist school blocks were built, housing 1000-1400 students, with efforts alongside UMCOR to deliver supplies to local schools.
However, in 2013, a civil war broke out, making the region unsafe for missionaries and travel. Many South Sudanese fled to Uganda, including most of the Methodists from Yei, who settled in a large refugee camp just across the border. That camp now houses approximately 220,000 people.Today, peace and stability appear more hopeful, and many refugees long to return home. Bishop Scott Jones has made contact with church leaders in refugee camps and learned that 40 Methodist congregations in Sudan, South Sudan, and Egypt have expressed interest and excitement about joining the Global Methodist Church.
The MidSouth Annual Conference has been invited to help bridge a connection between our conference and this emerging Nile River Valley Annual Conference. This is exciting news—evidence that God is on the move! Many of our members who once supported the mission in Yei will now have the opportunity to renew that partnership of love and faith. We invite you to join in this effort as we assist these people to spread the Gospel across their communities.

Here is how your church can participate:
The Conference Council has approved this mission to raise funds and we are asking each of our 277 congregations to consider participating in this prayerfully renewed mission—supporting refugees and church leaders in Sudan, South Sudan, and Egypt.
These efforts will assist in:
- Raising at least $40,000 as a 2025 Christmas Offering for renewed mission in South Sudan.
- $25,000 of this will help our brothers and sisters in the 40 Methodist congregations establish a new Global Methodist Church Annual Conference.
- $15,000 will be to send leaders from the MidSouth to South Sudan with Bishop Scott Jones in February 2026.
